Amphora Hotel & Suites — a quiet, sunny November in Paphos

A gorgeous November escape to Cyprus: warm enough for the sea, quiet enough to feel like you have the harbour to yourself, and a hotel that sits right on the coastal path.

We flew to Paphos in mid-November hoping for a last dose of warmth before winter, and the island delivered in spades. The temperature sat in the low twenties, the sea was still swimmable, and the light had that soft, golden quality that makes every photograph look like a postcard. Best of all, the summer crowds had gone, so the harbour promenade was calm and the restaurants were easy to book.

Amphora Hotel & Suites is set on the coastal walkway between the harbour and the lighthouse, with most rooms looking straight out over the Mediterranean. We had a suite with a small balcony, and we ended every day there with a drink as the sun went down. The hotel itself is modern and unfussy, built around a courtyard pool that catches the sun for most of the day. Breakfast is generous — fresh fruit, local cheese, warm pastries — and the staff are genuinely friendly, the kind who remember how you take your coffee after the first morning.

The harbour is a ten minute stroll along the coast, and it became our sunset ritual. The medieval fort at the end of the mole glows amber in the evening light, and the fishing boats bob quietly in the shallow water. We picked up gelato most nights and walked slowly back along the promenade, past the lit-up ruins at the archaeological park boundary. There's a low-key rhythm to the town in November that we came to love.

By day we hired a car for a couple of trips inland. The Troodos mountains are less than an hour away, and the drive up through vineyards and stone villages is worth doing on its own; we had a long lunch at a family-run taverna in Omodos where the meze kept arriving until we begged them to stop. The Akamas peninsula in the other direction is wild and empty in November — the Baths of Aphrodite are quieter than the summer photos suggest, and the coastal road out towards Lara Bay is spectacular.

Back in town, the Tombs of the Kings archaeological site was a genuine highlight. We had the place almost to ourselves and could wander down into the carved rock chambers without a queue. The mosaics at the Paphos Archaeological Park a little further along are extraordinary — some of the best preserved Roman floors in the Mediterranean — and again, in November, you can take your time with them.

Some seasonal beach clubs and tavernas were closed, and the evenings did cool down by the sea, so a light jumper was useful after sunset. But the trade-offs felt more than fair: warm days, quiet streets, empty ruins, and a hotel that felt like our own. November in Paphos is genuinely one of the best off-season weeks we've had.
