South Africa at Christmas — Cape Town and Timbavati in the summer sun

A Christmas escape that split perfectly between Cape Town's beaches and restaurants, and the quiet drama of the Timbavati bush.

We arrived in Cape Town on Christmas Eve to blue skies and a warm south-easterly wind. It felt strange to leave a British winter behind, but watching the sun set over Camps Bay with a glass of local Chenin Blanc on Christmas Day quickly fixed that. The city was lively but not packed, the restaurants were open, and the energy was relaxed.

We spent the first four days on the V&A Waterfront, taking the cable car up Table Mountain, driving the Chapman's Peak route, and eating our way through the city. Boulders Beach was the highlight for the kids, penguins waddling within arm's reach. The food scene is genuinely world-class — we had a long, slow lunch at a winery in Constantia and still talk about it.

Then we flew to the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve for a five-night safari. It is adjacent to Kruger but feels completely private, and the summer green was lush after the rains. Over the Christmas week we saw lions, a leopard dragging a kill into a tree, and a herd of elephants cooling off at a waterhole. Our guide was calm, knowledgeable and clearly loved every day out there. The lodge itself was small, with excellent food and a real family atmosphere. It was a Christmas like no other.
